A Behind the Scenes Look at Blood Wolf Moon

October 29, 2021

I recently shared a few extra tidbits about Briseras and the writing of “Blood Wolf Moon” with my reading community, the Story Enclave. And I wanted you to have access to them here too!

“Blood Wolf Moon” delves into Briseras’s backstory, before her travels to Caldara, when she’s hunting the vampire Malthael through Tor’stre Vahn. You can read this story wherever you are on your journey through the Age of Azuria series epic fantasy series, though it’s set before the events of Buried Heroes book one.

I don’t want to give too much away, but I can tell you that you’ll find several familiar figures throughout the story! And of course, since it’s Briseras, a plentiful dose of badassery as well!

About the Writing Process

I love all of the characters in Age of Azuria, but Briseras has a special place in my heart.

One of my favorite things about writing for her is how action-oriented she is. She’s ready-to-go and reactive, which feels so different in the writing (and reading!) from Iellieth’s contemplation or Persephonie’s optimistic determination.

It was really interesting to write for this earlier version of her who is both more and less self-assured. (You’ll see what I mean when you read the story.) At the beginning, I thought I knew exactly where the story would go and how we would get there, but as usual, the story surprised me along the way!

Briseras actually started as my very first D&D character, complete with her wolf companion, Vera, and I still have a set of lucky red dice that I use exclusively for her!

You can read more about how Dungeons and Dragons has influenced my fiction here.

About the Story

How many hunters does it take to catch a vampire?

For those who roam the wilds of Tor’stre Vahn, the answer, of course, entirely depends upon both the hunters and the vampire in question.

But what about a vampire who leaves behind a trail on purpose? How many blood-filled footsteps would it take for you to find him? And how far would you be willing to go once you did?

Briseras Ravisthinia is ready to answer fate’s call and questions. One huntress and her wolf. No more victims. And however far it takes.

Each stride takes her closer to her destiny. Shadows flicker behind her heels. Briseras would be the first to tell you: There is no life outside the hunt. But here, death hovers all around.
