Phantom, Chapter Six, A Festival of Games
Natalya’s body still ached from the necklace’s assault and the lack of sleep as Oxbrow led her by parading chain through the streets of Madrogas to the famed festival carnival. Over and again, she pictured the piercing, silver-gray eyes of Lord Graveston peering over her. He’d caught her hand so swiftly—a unique feat for a noble. And he had accepted her magically conjured knives without question, as though they were commonplace. Had it been another noble who had awakened her, they likely would have died. Their reactions to physical exertion were slow. Most entrusted their steward or guards with dangerous tasks, not wanting to risk themselves, a decision pattern that left them vulnerable. But in this, as in many other things, she would guessed, Lord Graveston was different from the others.
